IES recently did an energy audit for this 10,000 sq. ft. historic post office, used for a multi-tenant office building. The methodology used included utilizing an infrared camera and blower door to gather data about the quality of the insulation and amount of air infiltration. Secondly, energy bills were analyzed to understand the energy use relative to the external and internal loads. The overall goal of the project was to advise the client on how to save 15% or more on energy costs. |

The custom Energy Conservation Report provided recommendations on window repair / replacement, sealing ductwork, insulating easily accessable exterior walls and attic areas, and adding controls to the HVAC and lighting systems. In addition, IES recommended a training session for the building's tenants on how they can conserve energy through proper use of the thermostat controls.

According to the Department of Energy analysis, commercial buildings alone account for 18 percent of total energy consumption. While that proportion has been stable over the last five years, it's up from 13 percent in 1975. In addition to energy, buildings also generate a dizzying amount of greenhouse gas emissions, increased water consumption, waste and other by-products that can harm the larger environment. | | | |
