ICE DAMMING PROBLEM:
Ice dams sometimes occur on sloping roofs in cold climates with freezing
temperatures. When the temperature in your attic is above freezing, usually caused by poor insulation, it causes snow on the roof to melt and run down the sloping roof. When the snowmelt runs down the roof and hits the colder eaves, it refreezes.

Contrary to popular belief, gutters âdo notâ cause ice dams. However, gutters can allow ice and water to concentrate at vulnerable roof-eaves areas, particularly if the gutters are not clear of debris.

As gutters fill with ice, they often bend and rip away from the house bringing down fascia, fasteners, and downspouts. Ice dams are ultimately a direct sign of heat loss. | | | |
